Pop'n Music

Pop’n Music (ポップンミュージック), developed by Bemani and published by Konami, is the first title in the Pop’n Music series.

★Release Information

Release date: September 28th, 1998

★General Information

Pop’n Music ran on the same hardware as Beatmania, the BEMANI DJ-MAIN HARDWARE arcade system, and would go on to use this hardware until Pop’n Music 3 as well as Pop’n Stage. The game also saw the appearance of two of the composers who worked on Beatmania, Reo Nagumo and Hiroshi Takeyasu. Pop’n Music also marked the first appearances of some of Bemani’s more recognisable artists, including Tomonori Ikeda, Kiyotaka Sugimoto, and Sanae Shintani.

The game had three different game modes: Beginner, Normal, and Excite. Beginner mode is the easiest of the three difficulties, in which the player can only play as Mimi or Nyami and there are only two stages as opposed to the usual three. Normal mode is the standard mode, in which there are three stages and rival characters will block/interrupt gameplay with an ojama-like effect. Excite mode is the final game mode and is very similar to Normal mode except ojamas are triggered throughout the song at random.
